About
Information: Korea Tourism Organization (TourAPI)Located in the heart of Seoul, Changgyeonggung Palace was originally built as Suganggung Palace by the 4th ruler of the Joseon dynasty, King Sejong (r.1418-1450), for his retiring father, King Taejong. It often served as residential quarters for queens and concubines. During the reign of King Seongjong (r.1469-1494), the palace was renovated and renamed to Changgyeonggung Palace. It later became a park with a zoo and a botanical garden during Japanese colonial rule. The palace grounds remained this way until 1983 when restoration of its old grace was completed.
Our guide
Changgyeonggung Palace closes at 21:00, later than most places around it, so it can be the last stop of a day. Only Deoksugung among Seoul's palaces keeps the same 21:00 close; the others shut at 17:00 or 18:00.
Closed on Mondays. Changgyeonggung shares its Monday closing with Seoul's other palaces except Gyeongbokgung, which closes on Tuesdays, so Gyeongbokgung is the palace for a Monday.
Getting to Changgyeonggung: about 1 h 30 from Incheon Airport (AREX to Seoul Station, then Line 1 to Jongno 3-ga) and 50 min from Gimpo. From Myeongdong 27 min on Line 4 to Hyehwa, Seoul Station 29 min, Hongik Univ. 40 min, Gangnam 50 min.
